The area referred to by article 3 of the specifications for the production of Montefalco wine is the province area of Perugia at the heart of Umbria and stretches over the entire municipal area of Montefalco and part of the municipalities of Bevagna, Giano dell’Umbria, Gualdo Cattaneo and Castel Ritaldi. This is a very small production area, with lands gently sloping along the hills and the altimetry of the cultivation area ranging between 220 m above sea level and 472 m above sea level on the highest hills with medieval towns on the top. The inclination of the vineyards and their general exposure is varied, so as to create a large range of microclimates and cultivation conditions.

One of the best-known wine areas in Umbria will be electric and accessible with zero emissions to promote innovative and sustainable projects. Consorzio Tutela vini Montefalco and Enel X, the new division of the electric group focused on innovative products, electric and digital solutions, have signed an agreement to realize a recharging net for electric vehicles in many wineries belonging to Consorzio.  The 15 wineries which have endorsed he initiative will identify the space to place the recharger, while Enel X will take care of the installation as well as of the connection with the electricity grid and the maintenance. Enel X, what’s more, has launched Enel X Recharge, the innovative service to recharge the vehicle just through the App Enel X Recharge or the membership card. Any winery will have the opportunity to put its logo on the recharging App to be well visible and easily traceable.

Before the Grape Assistance project, which has launched a new model of technical assistance for the sustainable management of the vineyard, applied in 2017 throughout Umbria region, based on the introduction of methods to reduce chemical products with continuous monitoring which allow to intervene with focused treatments, supported by forecasting models, crucial to reduce the utilization of plant protection products and managing the viticulture treatments with more awareness. The project Grape Assistance has introduced a group of wineries of Montefalco area to DSS Systems (Decision Support System) of last generation allowing to test the model on the most representative variety of Sagrantino territory. The results have been encouraging and have demonstrated that is possible to spread these technologies on the whole territory.

Hence the development of the SMART-WATHER-FORECAST project, application of the “Montefalco Sagrantino model” experimented with Grape Assistance throughout Umbria region, able to report on phyto-pathological bulletins, agricultural-forecasting service, water consultancy, etc., aiming to achieve different objectives oriented to the competitiveness of farms and environmental sustainability, with particular reference to:
– Prevention and management of business risks,
– Better use of production factors,
– Qualification of company management,
– Streamline the use of non-renewable resources,
– Improve the reception of agricultural activity in some areas,
– Increase the environmental sustainability of production and the degree of innovation of agricultural companies.
The first data emerging from the Smart-weather-forecasting project for the wine sector in Umbria in the last year are absolutely encouraging.

The data related to organic viticulture in the area of Montefalco appellations are important as well: about 28% of the wineries belonging to Montefalco appellations is organic, certified biodynamic or are in conversion to get the organic certification. Moreover, there are many eco-sustainable projects promoted by the companies of Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG territory, individually or in groups: installation of photovoltaic systems and for the reduction of greenhouse gases, zoning of biodiversity, production of the first certified organic Traditional Method sparkling wine in Umbria, vegan certification, etc.
A long list of actions aimed to respect the environment and to make Montefalco territory one of the “greenest” wine areas in Italy.
